Motorola Xoom Overview: One of the Best Android Tablets in 2011

When people intend to get a new tablet, iPad is probably a brand that first comes to their mind. Yes, this brand is a remarkable name in the world of tablets for the features that it offers. Its attractive applications are able to facilitate people in the way they communicate.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

However, now the situation is a little bit different since iPad has got some competitors. Some brands start releasing android tablets and offering features that are similar to iPad. For some people, those brands become a great alternative when they need to buy tablet. They only need to pay cheaper price for the technology; meanwhile they can get the same satisfaction as when they use iPad.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

One of the superb brands that also tries to produce android tablets for you is Motorola. The latest tablet that this brand released at the beginning of 2011 was Motorola Xoom. Because of its advanced features, this product is always mentioned as one of the best tablets in 2011. Motorola Xoom is claimed as the most powerful competitor for iPad. To get you know more about this popular tablet, here is the overview:

· Physical Appearance

This new tablet offers only one color, namely black. About the weight, this PC is heavier than the iPad 2. It weighs 730 grams (25.75 oz); meanwhile, iPad 2 only weighs 613 grams (21.62). The backside of this device is coated by plastic so that your hands won't be slipped when gripping it. You can also get the arch shape on the backside; it makes this device looks thinner and allows you to grip it more easily. This Motorola product offers 10.1 inch of touch screen with better resolution.

· The Software and Operating System

This new device uses Android 3.0 as its OS, or it is known as Honeycomb. This operating system works better for multi tasks, offers an access to more than 100,000 android applications, more interactive widgets, and some other great improvements. The software used in Motorola Xoom is designed specifically for tablets so that users can get everything they need when communicating with this device.

· The Good Sides of It

This popular device is using the fastest mobile processor namely Tegra 2 dual-core 1 GHz processor. It offers 1 GB RAM; this memory enables you to play 3D gaming smoothly and run the programs fast. The operating system of this device still has some drawbacks but the experts optimistic that it will keep growing in the future. Using this android tablet also enables you to have a great video chat. There is a 2 MP front camera on the device and you can use it for video chatting.

· The Bad Sides of It

Now, Motorola Xoom comes with only 3G capabilities and this situation leads this company to conduct LTE 4 upgrades. Unfortunately, this upgrade may waste your time as you have to ship it to Verizone and wait for 6 business days to get complete upgrade.

The way they locate the lock button on the backside of the device makes users find difficulties in reaching the button.

The third bad side of this product is its weight. In the tablet world, the weight is considered to be heavy so that you need extra effort when carrying this device. In fact, a tablet PC should be light in weight since it is created specifically to accompany your traveling time.

Mobile Phone Screen Technology: Super AMOLED Display

Over the past three years from the introduction of the iPhone to the latest mobile operating system Windows Phone 7, mobile phones have been getting rapidly more sophisticated and have been transformed with the introduction of applications. However, though it is the software - apps and operating systems - that have dominated headlines, this functionality would not be possible without supporting developments in hardware. For example all those HTC Desires and iPhone 4s would be almost inoperable without the help of speedy 1GHZ Snapdragon processors. Similarly, web browsing and photo viewing would be futile without the support of robust mobile phone screens.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

Indeed Samsung has been pulling customers away from smartphone titans HTC and Apple with the astonishing super AMOLED screens on its top-end mobile phones like the Omnia 7 and Galaxy S. But what makes Samsung's screens so super? Read on an understanding of how mobile phone screens function and what makes a super AMOLED display stand out.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

TFT LCD screens

For some time the industry average for touch screen mobile phones was TFT LCD - thin film transistor liquid crystal display. TFT LCDs were a significant advance over previous cathode ray tube displays (CRTs) for being more lightweight, reliable and cheaper.

However, liquid crystals are unable to directly emit light and so TFT LCD screens also require a backlight. So a TFT LCD screen has several layers - back light, liquid crystal, touch screen sensors and outer window. These extra layers blunt the image and colour.

AMOLED screens

The next progressions from TFT LCD displays are AMOLED screens (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode screen). An OLED screen is also specific type of thin film display. However unlike a TFT LCD it is able to generate its own light using organic compounds. This makes an OLED display thinner than a TFT LCD as it does away with the back light layer. The 'active matrix' - the AM of AMOLED - is the technology that orders the display's pixels allowing it to display finer images with stronger colour.

Importantly for smartphones with their wide range of battery-sucking features, an AMOLED screen uses less power than an LCD screen.

Next generation AMOLED screens

Samsung is the most high profile manufacturer to take AMOLED screens a step further by incorporating touch screen sensors directly into the display screen. These 'super AMOLED' displays operate as an AMOLED screen does but without the need for an additional layer of capacitive touch screen sensors.

Though the name isn't quite as evocative as the iPhone 4's "Retina Display", Samsung's super AMOLED screens have certainly given devices like the Samsung Omnia 7 a competitive edge. Reviewing it, the display resolution is superb. It's especially well suited to the Windows Phone 7 interface -Microsoft's vivid menus and windows pop with rich colour. The brightness levels are also up on the average, which gives solid black and a crisp contrast ratio. By reducing the number of layers and the spaces between them, the screen is also more usable in direct sunlight than most OLED mobile phone screens and has a wider viewing angle.

Screens of the Future

For now the super AMOLED screen is at the highest end of mobile phone screen technology. But how will screens develop in the future? Manufacturers are currently working on solutions for common complaints, such as widening viewing angles and the strength of colours in direct sunlight. This will be even more important as tablet devices increase in uptake and users come to expect more visual functionality of their phones, tablets and e-readers.

Upcoming Tablet Computers Launched at 2011 CES

The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has brought a new wave of innovative, slender touchscreen tablets PCs and electronic reading devices to the marketplace.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

Some of these tablets will allow you to surf the Web, watch movies and play casual games without the need to rely on a bulky laptop and its traditional keyboard. Other gadgets focus on features such as reading for long periods of time without killing the batteries and without eye strain, e.g. the Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device.

Touchscreen Tablet Windows

Although Apple's iPad tablet computer is still the market leader in the emerging market for tablets, it probably won't be for long, due to its price. Analysts think the new Apple tablet to be launched around March / April could cost anywhere from 0 to ,000, and probably will be a fully functional computer, rather than a more passive device for reading books and watching movies. That could help justify the higher price tag.

In contrast, the tablet design unveiled by Freescale at 2011 CES in Las Vegas could sell for as little as 0.

In anticipation of Apple's launch of iPad 2, Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft's chief executive, showed off at 2011 CES a new Hewlett-Packard tablet PC running Windows 7 with a full-color touch screen displaying videos and books.

At the 2011 CES, Lenovo (the Chinese computer manufacturer) showed an innovative tablet PC called the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid Notebook. It appears to be a regular laptop, until the screen pops out of its shell and it becomes a slender, glossy touchscreen tablet running a Linux-based operating system.

Spring Design, a Taiwanese start-up, showed off at 2011 CES a dual screen e-book device, the Alex e-Reader, that has a 3.5-inch color display and a 6-inch black-and-white display. This reading device, which is expected to be out in February 2011 and cost 9, could display book and video hybrids.

Many more tablets are expected to be launched this year. In a new 5-year forecast just released, Forrester Research said it expected tablet PCs to grow as fast as MP3 players in the United States, and projected that 82 million Americans would own tablet computers by 2015.
